| CURRENT POSITION ON PENDING TRANSNET STRIKE (8/5) |

UTATU/SARWHU’s current position is that at this stage they have not signed the new wage offer received late yesterday afternoon. Transnet management has agreed to extend the time frame for the unions to obtain a mandate from their members who will finally decide if the new offer is accepted or rejected. Management extended period is to 16h00 on the 11 May ’10 (Tuesday) . It will most definitely the members who will decide who will accept or reject the offer and if rejected we will join our comrades Satawu as from Wednesdays 06h00. We believe it’s a very good offer under the current financial position of the company and the country and we will do our utmost best to “sell” this to our members as our country cannot afford a strike of this magnitude. As we received hundreds of urgent request from the biggest company’s in SA not to embark on strike action as they will have to retrench some of their workers if the strike proceeds. Unfortunately we will not be in a possession to delay the strike by later than Wednesday if our members reject the current offer. FEDUSA firmly believes that UTATU has taken the correct decision that as it is in the best interest of SA and the economy to confirm the mandate from its members says Dennis George – General Secretary Fedusa. THE PENDING STRIKE IS THEREFORE SUSPENDED UNTILL WEDNESDAY MORNING WHEN UTATU AND SARWU HAS OBTAINED A MANDATE FROM THEIR MEMBERS.
